View all productsBuilt for Carp Fishing: What Makes a Carp Rod Different?
Unlike general coarse rods, carp fishing rods are designed to handle the unique demands of targeting (and landing) these large, hard-fighting fish. Carp rods typically feature higher test curves (3.5lb+) and sometimes longer lengths (12–13ft). A great rod balances casting power with fish-playing control, allowing you to deliver accurate casts over long distances and apply the right amount of pressure when it counts. Modern carp rods are typically made from carbon fibre: lightweight but strong. Whether you're working tight swims or fishing to the horizon, we stock a wide range of rods to suit every type of fishing style and venue.
Different Types of Carp Rods
Whether you’re just starting out or a seasoned veteran pushing the boundaries of distance casting, our comprehensive range of carp fishing rods is carefully selected to cater to anglers of all abilities:
-
All-round rods: Great for anglers looking for versatility. Suitable for most fishing situations, from general casting with lead clips to PVA bag work, and are forgiving enough for playing fish of varying sizes.
-
Distance casting: Built for big chucks and open water. These rods tend to be longer (12–13ft) to deliver powerful, long-range casts.
-
Spod rods: Designed to propel heavy bait-filled spods or spombs out to your chosen feeding area.
-
Marker rods: Lightweight rods designed for plumbing the depths and reading the lakebed, mapping out the contours of your swim. They are typically stiff but sensitive, allowing you to feel every drop-off, gravel patch, or weedbed when used with a marker float.
-
Spod & Marker rods: Typically much stiffer than standard fishing rods, often with test curves around 5lb to serve both spodding and marking duties.
-
Stalking rods: These are shorter, lighter, and more compact rods, typically around 9ft or 10ft, often featuring telescopic or retractable butt sections for easy transport. Ideal for shorter sessions where you're seeking out active fish.
What to Look for When Buying a Carp Rod
The ideal rod length, typically ranging from 9ft to 13ft, largely depends on the size of the lake you're fishing. Shorter 9–10ft rods suit smaller venues and stalking, or enclosed swims with overhead branches, while longer rods (12-13ft) are favoured for distance casting.
The test curve, measured in pounds (lb), indicates the force required to bend the carp fishing rod to a certain point. A higher test curve (3.5lb+) means a more powerful rod, capable of casting heavier leads and handling larger fish. Lighter curves (2.5–2.75lb) suit close-in work or where you want sensitivity to feel the fish's movements. A common preference is a 3.5lb or 3.75lb test curve, striking a balance between adequate casting power and sufficient bend to absorb the impacts of a running carp.
The rod action dictates how the rod bends under pressure. Fast action rods, also known as tip action, have a stiff butt and mid-section with a flexible tip. They’re great for powerful, long-distance casting but often require very precise technique. Through action rods bend progressively from the butt to the tip, offering a forgiving feel that's superb for playing fish, absorbing lunges, and reducing hook pulls, particularly in close-quarters or margin fishing. A popular middle ground is the progressive action (or mid-tip) rod, which provides a balanced bend through the mid-section, making it a versatile choice for most angling situations.

Choosing a Carp Rod Based on Where and How You Fish
Are you looking to upgrade or just getting started? Are you chasing 40lb-plus monsters or enjoying short sessions on local club waters? Choosing the right rod isn't just about specs; it's about your angling style and venue. If you’re fishing large lakes where long casting is needed, look for longer rods with higher test curves and fast actions. For intimate venues and margin work, a shorter, softer rod gives better control and a more enjoyable fight. For newer anglers, an all-round rod with a progressive action and a mid-range test curve provides a good balance of casting potential and fish-playing ability. Experienced anglers may prefer a tailored setup with dedicated rods for spodding, marking, or distance work.
